New York – A Queens man who killed his estranged wife by stabbing her 150 times in front of their kids was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday.
Oscar Novakovsky‘, 41, of 121st. Street in South Richmond Hill ,attacked Diane Sharma, 32, on January 15, 2012 in front of their three children, who were three, five and nine at the time.
Novakovsky left the murder weapon, a knife, protruding from Sharma’s neck.
In the previous September, Sharma had got an order of protection against Novakovsky after he tried to strangle her.
“This heinous act committed by a husband against his wife in front of their three small children as they cried and pleaded with him to stop while they attempted to pull him off of her was vicious and unimaginable,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
“The children will have to bear the emotional scars of what they witnessed for the rest of their lives.”
Novakovsky pleaded guilty in March to first-degree manslaughter. He told cops that his kids were screaming and trying to pull him off of Sharma, a Guyana-born woman. It was reported that the man was arrested after Police followed his bloody trail for three blocks.
“My stepfather stabbed my mom,” the stricken nine-year-old daughter of Sharma told New York Police. The couple’s two sons, aged three and four, were also at home at the time, but they did not witness the incident.
They lived on 117th Street in Jamaica, one of Sharma’s close friends in Guyana confirmed.
Reports are that Sharma and her husband were having marital difficulties for a while. Friends in Guyana said that Sharma had even refused to take photos with the man.
The New York Post reported that at the time of the incident, Sharma had taken out a restraining order against the man.
The man was held by New York Police in early September for allegedly assaulting and choking his wife, who then sought the restraining order against him.
The suspect is accused of slashing Sharma’s neck and stabbing her in the chest before fleeing.
“When we found her, she was lying on a bed with a knife sticking out of her neck,” one police source is quoted by the New York post as saying.
Cops responding to a report of an assault inside the home around 01:00 h spotted a trail of blood leading down the block. They tracked it and found the blood-soaked husband three blocks away on 115th Street, with cuts to his hands and arms.
A neighbour said the warring couple regularly engaged in violent blowups.
