A bus driver accused of assaulting a traffic officer was yesterday released on $10,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Terrence Park of 129 Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on April 8, at Commerce Street, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Constable Critchlow who is stationed at the Traffic Department of Brickdam Police Station.
It was further alleged that on the same day, Park resisted the arrest of Constable Critchlow who was at the time a peace officer acting in execution of his duties.
According to court facts, Park, the driver of a route 44 minibus, was caught by the cop soliciting passengers. The cop attempted to arrest the traffic violator who resisted the officer and held on to him in an effort to fight him off.
After seeing the commotion, a large crowd gathered at the scene and the officer called for backup and was able to apprehend his attacker.
Meanwhile, in another case, Magistrate Bess sent a 20-year old woman on her own recognizance (self bail) after she appeared before him for allegedly stealing a gold bracelet belonging to her aunt.
Celena Doodnauth is accused of stealing the item valued at $100,000 – between April 3 and 4 – at Ruimveldt. The article is the property of Davie Persaud.
Doodnauth, who had no legal representation pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Court facts revealed that on April 3, at around 08:00hrs Persaud hid the bracelet inside her mattress and left the home, leaving the defendant and her husband.
On April 4, at about 16:00hrs the complainant made checks for her jewellery and discovered that it was missing. The matter was reported to the police, and Doodnauth was arrested. The court heard that the young woman admitted to stealing the bracelet. Bail was granted to her after the prosecution had no objections.
Both matters will be called again on May 9.
