…as former chairman champions “better must come” drive
“Better must come!” Those are words featured on the Facebook page of Nigel Hughes in the wake of his recent
resignation from the Alliance For Change (AFC).
Hughes, who portrays himself as a patriotic Guyanese with a desire for genuine change, yesterday issued a brief statement confirming his decision to relinquish chairmanship of the AFC.
The statement, issued on his Facebook page read, “On the 11th day of April 2016, I tendered my resignation to the leadership of the Alliance for Change (AFC). My continuing to act as Chairman of the party had become difficult and untenable. It has been a privilege and honour to have served in the capacity as Chairman of the party. Better Must Come.”
Kaieteur News understands that the resignation has to do with the AFC’s handling of the issues involving Minister of State Joseph Harmon.
Persons in the hierarchy of the AFC declined to make specific and straightforward comments on the Hughes’ resignation. However, one executive who spoke to this newspaper said, “Nigel has always had independent views and if he feels strongly about something he holds on to it to the end.”
The executive said that Hughes felt passionately about allegations that Minister Harmon has been made corrupt and thinks that the AFC should take a firm stand for “what is right.”
No executive confirmed whether Hughes’ resignation has been officially accepted. One member said, “It has been tendered. I cannot say whether it has been declined or accepted.”
Kaieteur News contacted Hughes for comments on the short statement he published on Facebook but he indicated that he had nothing more to say on the issue. Hughes said that there is “nothing to add.” However, a keen look at Hughes Facebook page gave perspective. The phrase “better must come” was used quite often.
Commenting on the protest staged outside of Kaieteur News on Monday in support of Harmon Hughes said, “Guess the price of an independent view is being branded as opposition. Better Must Come.”
In response to support offered to him by one of his friends, Hughes said, “I still believe that Better Will Come.”
The Lawyer received tremendous support on Facebook for the “stance you took” and for his sustained call for Constitutional reform.
Hughes wife, Cathy remains an executive member of the AFC.
