A fisherman who police say stabbed a man over a woman was yesterday remanded to prison after he appeared to answer a murder charge at the City Court.
It is alleged that Michael Ridley, of 182 Garnett Street, Albouystown, Georgetown, on November 23, 2015, unlawfully killed 37-year-old Troy Brutus, at Garnett Street Albouystown, Georgetown. The father of two was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The defendant’s solicitor, Euclin Gomes, told the court that his client is currently in a relationship with a woman and asked for him to be granted reasonable bail. He said that following police investigations his client was placed on $50,000 station bail prior to this present charge, with the condition that he report to the Ruimveldt Police Station at specific times.
He argued that since his client consistently reported to the police to prove his innocence there is no reason why he would be considered a flight risk.
However, Prosecutor Dinero Jones objected to his client’s pre-trial liberty citing the gravity of the offence and the penalty it attracts. Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan refused the defendant bail and the matter will continue on April 28th for report and fixtures.
According to police reports the 36-year-old man and the deceased fought over a woman. Reports indicate that Brutus had a previous relationship with the woman. Then she had entered into a relationship with the accused. It was reported that on that November night, the defendant came to his Garnett Street home and was attacked by the now dead Brutus who stabbed him about his body. It was reported that the defendant managed to get a hold of the weapon and he stabbed his attacker.
Brutus was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital and was later pronounced dead. The suspect was apprehended and admitted to the hospital.
