Dear Editor,
Please provide me space in your column to speak of the expectations of Victorians.
Local government has just finished and expectations are high all over Guyana of those who are elected to serve in the councils, towns and in various positions; and Victoria Village is no different.
Bought by slaves and enjoyed the near presence of the late Forbes Sampson Burnham, Victoria is still underdeveloped compared to other schemes and villages around it. Victoria is in dire need of proper roads, the taxi drivers are crying out every day as I travel in the cars, I can’t help but listen to their cries of how much money they have to spend on tires and different parts that are affected by the deplorable state of the road in Victoria.
Even as a passenger I become concern many times as the vehicles are made to sway and lean on one side to make it through the road and given that more taxis are there now than five (5) years ago, the roads are getting bad even faster. There are limited lights on the road especially the west and East sidelines and occupants of those area are forced to catch a taxi to go to those dark places at night which could raise other concerns for the safety for our villagers especially our young women and school children.
I am building at a place where there is no water or light, as a matter of fact people are still using bowls to full buckets at pipes since the pipe presser is very low, Victoria needs help, we need caring people to look into these issues and not only make promises but to fulfill them. In Victoria there is no Money Gram, Western Union or a place that one can buy GPL credit, one has to go to Enmore to get GPL credit, why are we so underdeveloped? These are basics; why can Victorians have these services done? Is it the people or is it the lack of opportunity, for what we can do, we will do, but we need those we put in authority to play their part.
Our line top bridges are a mess especially the one to the west, one has to be on a “camel’s back” to climb up there and our young school children traverse that area daily. Our expectations are high and must be fulfill by those who are in positions to represent us at a Central Government level. It is time that this accent village becomes a proper place for people to posses and feel proud to be apart.
