Genesis winners Slingerz FC has remained the team to beat when they coasted to a 2-1
win in the feature match over the struggling Pele FC when Round 8 action of the STAG ELITE LEAGUE commenced on Friday evening last at the Leonora Track and Field Football Field.
But the match that would be the talk of the town for some time was the performance of 10-man Fruta Conquerors in disposing former undisputed National champions, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United whom they trashed 3-1 in the opening game.
Conquerors pulled away further from Alpha with the win and are now 5 points clear of their rivals. Jahall Greaves opened the scoring after 31 minutes of exchange to set Conquerors on their way to a memorable win.
Okenie Fraser’s red card in the 63rd minute for abusive language to the Referee did not jerk the focus of the Tucville based side as they doubled the advantage three minutes later on account of a classical goal from Eon Alleyne, who was fed the ball from a header in the box by his Captain Trevon Lythcott.
The ensuing shot from Alleyne rocked the nets in a split second to the delight of Conquerors. It was always going to be an uphill task for Alpha to pull things back from that point even as they missed a few chances that were created which naturally did not help their cause.
Five minutes to game time the icing was put on the cake for Conquerors when Hubert Pedro’s goal stole the spotlight, another classical strike that brought jubilation and celebrations among his peers.
Delon Lanferman netted a consolation goal for Alpha on the stroke of full time but it was a case of too little, too late for ‘The Hammer’ as they found themselves of the receiving end of their name. Alpha too, were reduced to 10-men in the 3rd minute of added on time, William Europe being booked for the second time in the match.
Slingerz registered their eight win in as many matches as they canter towards the FINALE title. Goals either side of play cemented the win for the West Demerara side, Devon Millington netting in the 32nd minute after a patient and dominating period for the GENESIS winners.
Millington, one of the consistent scorers for Slingerz continues to show his worth to the side, while another consistent marksman, Dominican national, Julian Wade who scored a double against Buxton in their previous match, win number 7, fired in the winner in the 58th minute.
Slingerz, buy a long stretch, the better team in the league never allowed Pele to have their way despite a few good moments, Omallo Williams looking the part but not able to penetrate the Slingerz defence.
Pele however, would pull one back in the 86th minute thanks to a Jumane Somerset strike but soon after, the final whistle sounded which formalized Slingerz’ eight win of the FINALE.
Matches continued last night at the #5 Ground, West Coast Berbice when Buxton United opposed the Guyana Defence Force and the home team, Monedderlust, entertained Georgetown Football Club.
