Dear Editor,
Guyana has come a long way and while we are poised to observe 50 years of independence from British Rule, the question arises “Are we as a nation really ready for the 50th Jubilee Celebration?”
It is expected that thousand of overseas visitors will be converging upon Guyana however, a simple look at the aftermath of the recent Easter celebration demonstrates that as a society we still need to change our mind set. The present Government since assuming office has been trying relentlessly to restore the Garden City but as citizens, we need to be more responsible and change the culture where we have no respect and appreciation for our surroundings. If we as individuals cared enough to walk with garbage bags to deposit the waste generated by our relatives, the mess that was visible round about Georgetown and its immediate environs would not be.
Moreover, some of the guests who are expected home will have the privilege of using the private transportation of their relatives locally. However, for those who are not so fortunate, they will be left to the mercy of the dishonest, reckless drivers who are recruited by some taxi services.
Over the Easter Weekend, I attended the Sparrow Show at the Pegasus Hotel accompanied by three other friends (one of whom was an overseas guest). At the end of the show, we took a Green Ice Taxi to return home. The cost of the drop was G$ 1400. My overseas friend not realizing that I had already paid the Taxi driver the fare also paid him G$1500. One would expect that the honest thing for the driver to do was to mention that he had already been paid but NO, I guess that was beyond him! So he received G$2900 for a G$1400 drop and you would have expected that placing a call to the Management of Green Ice Taxi the following day would have resulted in an attempt to appease the customer but NO – no satisfaction was given! Whatever happened to the customer? After all, without customers, there is no need for such services.
So I hasten to advise you unless there is an urgent change in the mind set of Guyanese to one that not only puts “self” first and greed, be extremely careful when directing your unsuspecting relatives to taxi services as they arrive in May, 2016. Avoid Green Ice Taxi Service as the level of dishonesty there has reached a new high.
