A search party is still trying to locate the body of Special Constable, Akeem Hyles, who drowned during
a Government operation to halt illegal mining around the Kaieteur National Park on Friday.
Commander of ‘F’ Division, Ravindradat Budhram, has confirmed that the body of the 22-year-old cop has not yet been recovered.
Police said that Special Constable 14536 Hyles was in a boat with Joint Services personnel and officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) when the vessel capsized.
The mishap reportedly occurred when the boat struck a rock.
There are reports that the other occupants managed to turn the boat upright and then continued their journey after failing to locate Hyles.
Budhram said that based on the information he received, the boat hit a rock and went down. He said that one rank could not be accounted for.
He could not say how many persons were in the vessel. Ranks were sent to the area on Friday to join the search party.
A statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources stated that the Government of Guyana commenced an operation with support from the Joint Services to halt illegal mining that has been on the increase in and around the Kaieteur National Park.
The release further stated that the Tactical Service Unit (TSU) rank went missing during the operation.
