– driver arrested after abandoning car
A 23-year-old soldier was killed in a hit and run accident around 05:10 hrs yesterday on Sheriff Street,
Georgetown, in the vicinity of Mae’s School.
The driver was later arrested after abandoning the car in Freeman Street, East La Penitence. He is in custody and is likely to appear in court as early as Monday.
The dead woman has been identified as Lashana Moore, a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank of Lot 917 Providence New Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
According to information received, Moore had just exited a taxi on Sheriff Street and was reportedly crossing the road when she was stuck down by the speeding car.
There are reports that the mother of one was struck by a second car which crushed her body.
Yesterday, the dead woman’s mother, Denise, said that her daughter died and left a seven-month old baby behind.
According to the devastated mother, around 06:00 hrs yesterday she received a call from someone who informed her that her daughter was involved in an accident. The woman immediately rushed to the scene.
“When I got there she was already dead. There were blood all over and a hole in her head,” the woman recalled. Her body appeared broken.
The woman explained that her daughter would usually stay at Camp Ayanganna and return home on weekends. The woman could not say where her daughter was heading at the time of the accident.
“She was supposed to come home. Her baby does be by my mother and on weekends she does collect the baby and then come home,” the older Moore related.
She added that she last spoke with Lashana on Friday and the woman had informed her that she would be coming home on Saturday to plait her sister’s hair.
The woman said that the soldier was the eldest of four children. She joined the force five years ago.
Senior ranks met with Lashana Moore’s family yesterday and expressed their condolences.
