A Corentyne, Berbice mother is seeking the assistance of the public to fund an eye surgery for her son who is now blind. He was shot with pellets during the second day of the Camp Street prison riots.
The mother, Anika Mangal, traveled all the way from Berbice earlier this week to make her situation known.
The mother related that her eldest child, 31-year-old Devindra Persaud, was shot in both eyes and about the body with pellets fired by members of the Joint Services after he was ordered to exit his cell.
She recalled that her son was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) where he was seen by an ophthalmologist who recommended that the young man be taken to Trinidad for corrective surgery on the eyes since the operation cannot be done locally.
A document seen by this publication showed that the prisoner was admitted to the hospital on March 4, after suffering injuries to both eyes. X-rays show that the pellet is now lodged at the posteronasal region of the inferior orbit along the medial wall.
Mangal explained that she was informed that the surgery will cost US$10,000. She however disclosed that the Ministry of Public Health has since promised to foot half the cost.
She explained that her son had been on remand for three years after she was unable to post $150,000 bail at the time. When asked for what offence her son was charged, the mother stated that she could not recall. Mangal added that her son is now at home in her care thanks to relatives who assisted her with accumulating the money.
The mother related that her son never had a father figure in his life and believes that being able to raise the money will gave her a second chance at making things right with her first born.
Mangal said that she is a single parent and would be grateful for any assistance since she has to find the remaining cost and also pay for airfare and accommodation.
