Yesterday at the 704 Sports Bar and Lounge in the City the five Guyanese West Indies players who participated in the U-19 and Women’s World Cup cricket tournaments where honored by the Government of Guyana
The five Guyanese West Indies players with Sports Minister, Director of Sports, NSC Chairman, Minister of Tourism, Head of Digicel Marking and GCB President at 704 Sports Bar & Lounge yesterday.
(GOG) and the West Indies team’s sponsor Digicel.
According to Director of Sports Christopher Jones it was decided at National Sports Commission (NSC) statutory meeting on February 25 to host a luncheon for the three U-19 Cricketers on April 6.
Jones explained that due to logistical constraints this event was postponed to today, and because of that the NSC took the opportunity to include the two Guyanese female cricketers who were members of the Regional side.
Shimron Hetmyer, Captain of Championship winning West Under-19 side that beat India in the U-19 50-over World Cup final in Bangladesh on February 14 and his Guyanese team mates Vice Captain Kemo Paul and Wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach were at 704 yesterday.
Berbicians Tremayne Smartt and Shemaine Campbell, members of West Indies Women’s T20 World Cup team which defeated three-times defending Champions Australia in India, were also there.
The ‘fantastic five’, proudly decked out in their Digicel West Indies shirts, were recognized for being involved in history as West Indies won three ICC World Cups in the same year, an unprecedented achievement in World Cricket.
The West Indies also won the Men’s T20 World Cup by beating England on the same day that their girls lifted the female title, but they were no Guyanese players in the Men’s team.
While both females are from Berbice there was one U-19 player each from Berbice (Hetmyer), Essequibo (Paul) and Demerara (Imlach). Hetmyer joins fellow Guyanese Clive Lloyd (1975 & 79 World Cups) as the only players from the West Indies to win ICC 50-over titles.
Present yesterday were the Director of Sports, Minister of Tourism Cathy Hughes, Chairman of the NSC Ivan Persaud, Sports Minister Nicolette Henry and Digicel’s Head of Marketing Jacqueline James and President of the GCB Dru Bahadur.
The GCB head promised that his board will honour the Leon Johnson led Guyana Jaguars back-to-back Regional First Class crowns for the first time since sponsored First-Class cricket began in 1966. The Ceremony will be held Monday evening.
“We thank you for making each and every Guyanese proud, you are all ambassadors. The Ministry of Tourism is awarding the players a free trip each to the Kaieteur falls.”
The very approachable Tourism Minister Hughes specially thanked the two lasses and noted that they are now role models for women. “I want to single out the women. Because of you the women of Guyana are proud,” Hughes said.
Digicel, who had already made presentations to the trio of U19 players a month back, provided the five cricketers with phones among other items.
“It was especially important to embrace the strides made by two females. We must celebrate our women because they are role models of the highest level and we believe that this is the start of something great,” Jacqueline James, the Marketing Manager of Digicel said. The boys were previously rewards for their role in Bangladesh.
Minster Henry told the gathering that the occasion was joyous and monumental. “I’m proud of the occasion because we have a lot to celebrate for our 50th anniversary under the theme” Reflection, Celebration and Inspiration”.
“This could not have happened at a better time, thanks for putting Guyana on the map in a positive way. Job well done!” the Minister concluded.
Apart from the hampers compliments of Digicel, the five heroes collected other gifts which included plaques and Gold Jewellery. The girls were presented with bouquets.
