A tribute to Camptown’s Colin Hinds
By Statistician Charwayne Walker
When Guyana’s Golden Jaguars tackle Curacao on June, the first at the Providence Stadium in the C.F.U Second Round Qualifiers, the Christopher Nurse led unit will have one thing only on their minds: revenge.
Forty years ago, November 1976, Guyana and Curacao met for the first time in two friendly international at the then world famous GCC Bourda (the June 1st clash will be their third encounter.) Guyana led by Santos FC Maurice Enmore had to pull off all stops to draw the opener one all. Curacao went ahead in the 28th minute when Silvania beat Guyana’s custodian Desmond Marshall with a powerful strike. Guyana equalised 19 minutes from the full time. When debutant, 17 year old Colin Hinds, replaced Derek Anderson, he received a beauty of a pass from skipper Maurice Enmore. Hinds out ran two Curacao defenders and scored with a well-placed shot.
In the series decider played at the same venue, Curacao led by a hat-trick of goals from W. Martyn outplayed Guyana 4 goals to one. Martyn opened the scoring in the 9th minute, Silvanie made it two nil in the 13th minute. Camptown’s star boy Colin Hinds’ header scored off a Keith Wiler Niles corner in the 35th minute, saw Guyana at the half time mark, down by two goals to one.
On the resumption, Martyn made it three one with a strike in the 58th minute. Martyn completed his hat-trick in the 87th minute when the final whistle sounded, the score sheet read: Curacao 4 Guyana 1. The late Deryck Whitehead carried the whistle in both games.
So the million dollar question football diehard fans are asking is whether Christopher Nurse’s Golden Jaguars will avenge Maurice Enmore’s class of 1976 and who would emulate Camptown’s golden boy Colin Hinds who scored in both games against Curacao in 1976, only time will tell.
