Former President of the Guyana Teacher’s Union, (GTU) Colywn King, 52, has been found not guilty
of carnal knowledge.
King is acquitted some seven years after he was charged for having sexual relations with a teenage girl. According to the allegation, the former GTU President had carnal knowledge of a 15-year-old female on October 6, 2009.
Back then, the GTU official was arrested on October 14 and was released on $100,000 bail after the teenage girl leveled charges of being sexually involved with him at a Princes Street hotel.
Yesterday, King was told that he is free to go after he was found not guilty of the charge by a mixed twelve-member jury. The ex-GTU head had been on bail ever since the allegation surfaced in 2009.
He had pleaded not guilty to the charge at the commencement of an in camera proceeding before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. King was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Darren Wade. During the trial, State Prosecutors, Tuanna Hardy and Narissa Leander called eight witnesses, including the victim, to the stand.
Yesterday, King exited the courtroom of Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, with a relieved look on his face. Moments before, he stood nervously in the prisoners’ dock, awaiting word from the Jury on the fate of his future. The Jury took almost three hours to return the not guilty verdict of 10 – 2.
But before he was permitted to leave, Justice Sewnarine-Beharry told King that although he was found not guilty by the Court, he may still have to deal with the judgment from above.
“You escaped judgment from the law but you will not escape judgment from God,” Justice Sewnarine -Beharry stated.
At the initial stages of the matter, King was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 by former Magistrate Fazil Azeez. At that time, concerns were expressed over the whereabouts of witnesses and the matter being drawn out.
