My view on domestic abuse is that women who kill oppressive lovers who constantly batter them should not be jailed. My understanding of the world we live in is that it rests on context. Everything in life is contextual. I would not respect you with a “Good morning” if you are known to have strong expressive views on racial superiority. My disrespect is contextual.
If John has 50 goals in a football career spanning ten years and 25 matches, then it means that he scored five goals each year of playing and two goals in each match he played in.
If Jerry has 40 goals in a five-year career and played 20 matches, then context becomes important in judging who is a better player. Statistically John has the distinction of being the highest scorer in history for the club. But if context is added, Jerry may be a better player. I was literally stunned when I saw a BBC columnist using context to compare the brilliance of Sachin Tendulkar with other cricketers.
In looking at the statistics of Tendulkar with the Sri Lankan player, Kumar Sangakkara, the West Indian Chris Gayle and others, the columnist showed that Tendulkar’s brilliance is not so stunning despite the actual centuries, fifties and matches he has over many other cricketers. I would suggest if you are interested in the power of context, then read the following, “Sachin Tendulkar: The 29th Best Batsman in the World?” by Ben Carter, BBC online edition, November 15, 2013.
See my take on Carter’s research in my November 21, 2013 column. If you understand context, then you can comprehend the untold nuances of life.
I have not at the time of writing investigated complaints and reports I am getting that a murdered father incessantly molested his two very young daughters. I don’t want to go into details because the daughters have been charged with murder and further discussion may not be proper in the context of court proceedings.
In the US, commentators have more latitude. If what is being circulated about the dead father had hit the press in the US, countless numbers of persons would have published their opinion as to the murder charge. I could envisage people of the talk show circuit demanding the girls’ release. Our legal system is different.
Now that we have these reports, it is for the police to investigate them. Naturally, the girls themselves should open up to the police. They should express and describe in every conceivable detail what happened to them over the years of living with their father. This is a very unusual situation and the press, human rights organizations and women groups ought to start their respective investigation.
Let me get back to context. If it can be proved that these girls were constantly abused then society may want to advocate a certain course of action.
The world has long become intolerant of domestic abuse and parental molestation of young children. Men should be severely punished for brutalizing their women folk. If it wasn’t such a tragedy, women-battering could be seen as having a light side to it. These men pick on women who cannot fight back. They beat up women who cannot defend themselves. But throw them in a ring with men and many of them would be pulverized. In other words, they are congenital cowards. That makes you laugh. This is why I referred to the saga having a light side.
When the murder charge was made public, it immediately drove a curious note into your head. Why would they go to such extreme lengths? Of course, there is the other side of the coin. Why couldn’t they walk away and look for happier pastures? If that was a difficult road to pursue then it should have been tried no matter what.
But can we ever understand the way battered women and molested children feel? Desperation makes people do really crazy things. Can we understand the emotion of a young girl whose father would come in drunk each night, create confusion, beat her up and there is no prospect of escape?
I don’t know if the things I heard are true but if they are, then, it brings into view another sad story about this country. Just look at the smallness of our population and the incredible per capita statistics on murder and violence. Something is just not right about this country and the runaway train of violence seems unstoppable.
This country is drowning in the crimes of rape, incest, child molestation, domestic violence and homicidal madness.
