Residents on the Essequibo Coast, who in particular depend on the services of doctors and nurses and other designated medical practitioners employed at the Suddie Public Hospital, continue to complain of being wary and in stronger terms fed up by the poor services delivered to patients who visit that hospital.
In the same vein, residents are appealing to the Minister in charge of Health, George Norton, to pay keener attention to the prolonged misdeeds and correct those problems. Residents are also calling for the disbanding of the current Management Board and for a new one to be established, as well as for professional doctors to be registered at the hospital since they are claiming that the many young interns (doctors) that are currently employed at the hospital do not take their profession seriously.
One Perseverance resident, who accompanied her young nephew on Tuesday to the Suddie Public Hospital after he had complained to his teacher about experiencing extreme chest pains, said that she was forced to verbally lash out on several staff at the hospital after she was told that the receptionist was not there and that the place was locked up.
The young lady further explained that even the place where one has to uplift the “small card” was closed. Look, I just take my nephew Tuesday; the teacher call said he complaining of chest pain. I went and collect him.
“Oh boy, when you get there all over lock up, you can’t do anything until the receptionist is open.”
The Perseverance resident argued that her nephew’s case was one that should have been given priority since the child experienced difficulty breathing. When she finally got to see a doctor, her nephew saw an intern.
“She sat in a chair and couldn’t even get up. (She) calling my nephew.”
What was even more worrying, the resident said, was that she reached the hospital before noon.
The upset resident is awaiting an explanation from someone in authority.
Additionally, the unprofessional behaviour attitude of the medical staff of that hospital was discussed at a Regional Democratic Council meeting (RDC).
Members of the public are also concerned about an ECG machine which to date cannot be accounted for. The machine was discovered missing since last year.
Members of the managerial department of the hospital remain reluctant to say whether the heart machine was stolen from the hospital or whether the instrument was maliciously misplaced.
