Dear Editor,
Over the last twenty two years the City Engineer’s Department in cahoots with the Central Housing & Planning Authority allowed our capital city Georgetown, to go to rack and ruin in terms of a complete disregard for the zoning ordinances.
There is not a single ward that remains strictly residential, industrial or commercial. They are all mixed up with mechanic shops, car washes, hotels and night clubs sitting smack in the middle of suburban residential neighbourhoods, whilst persons are either squatting or living in industrial or commercial zones. This was done to facilitate graft, corruption and bribery.
I hope the new Council would see the benefits to zoning and reverse the existing chaotic situation. Zoning benefits include protecting and enhancing property values, preserving existing structures, preventing the mixing of incompatible land uses (such as erotic dance clubs and schools), allowing potential nuisance uses to be located away from residential neighborhoods or other sensitive areas, protecting recreational areas and open spaces, conserving environmentally sensitive areas guaranteeing adequate light, air, and privacy to new homes, but most importantly zoning gives the community some control over its land uses, appearance, and quality of life in the future.
There is a need to bring to an urgent halt, the drawing of plans by building inspectors and the approval of these plans by the City Engineer for commercial facilitates to be erected in residential districts.
