Popular radio announcer, Akelo Elliott, was yesterday ordered to pay a fine of $50,000 after admitting
to driving dangerously on the East Coast of Demerara thoroughfare, when he appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul.
The 31-year-old man was also fined $20,000 after pleading guilty to two counts of breaching traffic light signals when he appeared in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal David Goodridge, told the court that on April 5, two police officers were carrying out patrol duties when they observed that a white motorcar driven by Elliott had breached the stoplight at UG road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
As a result, an officer blared the siren of the patrol vehicle in an effort to alert the driver. Elliott continued driving at a fast rate of speed, heading east.
Goodridge said that the driver made a turn on to the Ogle Access Road, ECD although the traffic light did not indicate him to turn. He stated that the siren continued and Elliott failed to adhere.
The prosecutor informed the court that Elliott turned east on the railway embankment at a fast rate of speed causing other motorists and road users to pull off the roadway and on to the parapet to avoid a collision.
Goodridge added that he was intercepted and apprehended at Good Hope, ECD and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station where charges were laid.
However, Attorney Charles Ramson Jr. told the court that his client stopped as soon as he heard the siren. He related that his client has an unblemished criminal record and is regretful about his actions.
Failure to pay the fine on the dangerous driving charge will see the radio announcer being jailed for eight months. If he fails to pay the fine on the latter charges he will be imprisoned for four weeks.
Elliott had initially pleaded not guilty to the allegations in the absence of his attorney. He, however, sought advice from the lawyer and informed the court that he wanted to change his pleas. He had told the court that he is a public figure and denied driving away from the police.
