Dear Editor,
Please allow me the opportunity to add my support to the letter from Mr. Clinton Urling with regard to the APNU+AFC taking all the seats on city finance committee – in spite of the nomination of a Team Legacy member. It indeed sums up accurately one of the glaring deficiencies of our local government system that renders it a joke that is not even funny anymore.
What one has to understand is that the Finance Committee is the ‘Gravy Train’ of the Council’. This Committee gets to be involved in the granting of amnesty on interest owed by defaulting ratepayers, to award contracts to suppliers of goods and services, to sign vouchers for contractors, and the list goes on and on. This committee will also ensure that a proper external forensic audit is not done. The newcomers need to understand that they will not be let into this ‘Old Boys Club’ like that, it is too worthwhile. They have to sit in the trenches and wait. Maybe one day one of them may get lucky.
But it does not end there, they will also be left out of other key committees such as the Personnel & Training Committee, which has supervised in the past that enormous acts of nepotism s that is the hiring of friends and family, and the City Works Committee that gives permission for the construction of structures (most of them in violation of the building codes) in the city another rewarding area.
In Guyana the winners have a penchant to control everything, but it must realize that trying to control everything will lead to its own demise. Why are civil society, the media and social commentators so silent on this issue?
Is this the type of control the voters were expecting?
