Fyrish Black Sharks were at their destructive best as they left a path of destruction in mauling Ithaca Hardliners to win the final of the Anamayah first division basketball competition for teams in Berbice. The
shellacking was a 80-20 points rout.
Played last Sunday on the Fyrish Basketball Court, Corentyne, Berbice, the Black Sharks who were hunting in familiar territory made the environment as hostile and unfriendly as possible for their opponents as they attacked early.
By the end of the first quarter Black Sharks had shredded the limp Hardliners of Ithaca, West Berbice apart as they took the break at 16-6. By the start of the second quarter it was evident that there was no resistance as the merciless Black Sharks piled on the pressure. They scored 23 points to the visitors’ 2 .The half time score was 39-8.
When one thought the half time rest would have done something good for the visitors, it brought even more destruction with the Black Sharks sinking 27 points to their 6, to end that segment at 66-14.
By the start of the fourth quarter the Black Sharks had completely demolished the Hardliners and they could not have been happier than to hear the final whistle for the unbelievable 80-20 score line.
Leading the bounty hunting for Fyrish Black Sharks was the consistent Linden Joseph who poured in 22 points. He was matched by Joel Fraser who sunk 22. They were supported by Tafawa Dey with 14 baskets, while Phillip Edwards had six.
At the end of the competition $50,000 and the beautiful Anamayah Memorial trophy was presented to the Black Sharks team. The Hardliners received $30,000 and the runner up trophy. The most valuable player of the tournament was Linden Joseph and he received a trophy.
The tournament was organized by sports enthusiast Vibert Garnett.
