While yesterday was the designated day for public schools to reopen after the Easter holidays, there are reports that at least one school building was not entirely ready for this occasion.
The school in question is the Goed Fortuin Primary School, West Bank Demerara.
Reports suggest that when pupils turned up at the school yesterday they were greeted by workmen busily undertaking construction works at a section near the entrance of several classes of the school.
Some parents reportedly did not permit their children to remain at school.
Although teachers were also concerned about the ongoing works, they were, however, forced to proceed with their teaching responsibilities based on instruction from the Ministry.
In addition to the ongoing works, sections of the school were in an unkempt state.
But the Parent Teacher Association (GTA) of the school is not taking the situation lightly and therefore decided to bring the state of affairs to the attention of this publication.
A member of the PTA yesterday revealed that reports are that the works at the school only commenced Saturday rather than when the school closed for the holiday period.
“The teachers have to go ahead with this situation but it doesn’t mean that we have to accept it,” said the PTA member who added that “the PTA is concerned about the state of the school and the possible impact it could have on the children.”
Attempts were made by this publication to contact officials of the Region Three Education Department but these were greeted with reports that the two officers responsible for primary schools were in a meeting.
