WI all the way!! True champions, be it u19s, women’s or men’s championship! Super stuff by team WI! Brathwaite was breathtaking! #WT20Final
West Indies pulled off a sensational run-chase as they thumped England by four wickets in front of an electric crowd at the Eden Gardens to become the first team to lift the World Twenty20 title twice.
After the nail biting victory, an emotional Darren Sammy slammed the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) branding their attitude as ‘disappointing’. “People were wondering whether we would play this tournament, we had issues with the board, Mark Nicholas called us ‘players with no brain’. But all of us came together, these 15 men put adversity aside and played this type of cricket in front of such passionate fans. It was tremendous. I want to thank the coaching team, Phil Simmons,” Sammy said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
Echoing similar sentiments, Dwayne Bravo said that he along with some other players were being shunned from the 50 over squad by the Board and that the country’s cricket is ‘not in right hands’. “If we look at the calendar, we don’t have anymore T20 matches this year. We are not picked for the ODIs. There’s a series that’s going to happen with South Africa but we will be playing in England (Natwest Blast) whereas we should have been playing for the West Indies. Look at the love we get over here. Even the BCCI does more for us than our board,” Bravo told Star Sports after the match.
West Indies cricket has been swarmed with controversies which ranged from politics to bankruptcy and it has often affected the team’s tours and series. However, the region’s performance in the WorldT20 format across all charts is bound to mark a strong difference to the state of cricket in the nation. (India)
