A Nigerian trader, who allegedly travelled to Guyana on Easter Sunday, was yesterday pardoned by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after he pleaded guilty to the charge of illegal entry.
At the Georgetown Magistrates Court, Immanuel Innis Derry, who resides in San Paulo Brazil was pardoned and was charged to leave Guyana within 24 hours. It is alleged that on March 27, he entered Guyana by crossing a land frontier without presenting himself to an immigration officer.
Derry, who said that it was his first time in Guyana, pleaded guilty to the offence. According to prosecutor Corporal Dinero Jones, he came to Guyana in a vehicle. Through a thorough check of his passport it was revealed that he did not present himself to the nearest immigration office at Lethem. He was arrested in New Amsterdam and taken to the Caribbean Investigations Department where he was charged.
After hearing this, the defendant claimed that he did not know that he needed to walk with his passport. “I presented myself to the officer and I only had my ID and he said to me you need a stamp on your passport.”
On hearing this, the Chief Magistrate ordered that he be returned to Brazil within 24 hours. She then stated the next time should he travel to any country he should be familiar with the laws of the country before entering it.
