Dear Editor,
It is said what’s past is prologue and if Guyana’s recent past under successive PPP administrations where corruption became endemic and metastasized against the body politic of the nation; then those of us who clamored for change should have been less exuberant when APNU/AFC took office less than a year ago.
To be clear, I’ve been, and still am a strident critic of the morally bankrupt PPP and an early supporter of the AFC because I fervently believe that Guyana’s future development can only be achieved through genuinely honest coalition leadership that is people centric and is devoid of racial ideology.
Despite the early mistakes of the new government, I remained quiet because frankly they needed space to grow into governing after being in the opposition for more than two decades. I can no longer idly sit by and observe the corruption and incompetence that marked the PPP’s maladministration, as if by some weird form of osmosis become the exoskeleton of this APNU/AFC government.
Does Guyana have two presidents in Mr. Granger and Mr. Harmon? Whatever happened to the rationale for the unconscionable 50% pay raise for government ministers that better pay will somehow lead to less temptation for graft and corruption? Perception becomes reality. How can the President, Prime Minister and the Minister of Business NOT know that the deeply controversial Mr. Tiwarie was appointed as a “business advisor”? President Granger is left looking at best out of touch or at worst detached and not in charge.
Did Mr. Granger not know beforehand who all the members of the delegation were that traveled to China to conduct business on his and the country’s behalf? If not, why not? If the reporting in the media are true regarding “Stealth president” Harmon’s alleged intervention in precluding officers from executing their lawful duties against Bai Shan Lin, a company he rightfully railed against while in opposition but whose director accompanied him to China, then this is cause for removal from office. What a short distance he and by extension the APNU/AFC has traveled from excoriating the PPP for their corruption and cronyism to becoming PPP 2.O.
“Stealth president” Harmon, your documented shenanigans are compromising the government. Do the honorable thing and tender your resignation to the elected president. Use the euphemistic excuse that politicians who find themselves in trouble use; “I need to spend more time with my family.” The nation will thank you for saving them from further embarrassment.
