Dear Editor,
I have been a member of the Lusignan Golf Club for the past twenty years and I have always been one to boast about it being the best run sports entity in Guyana.
But over the past year I am ashamed to claim association with the club. I write this letter with pain in my heart to know that the new kids who have taken over the running of the club are beginning to sink it to the ground.
The club is presently being run by an acting president who for no apparent reason seems bent on running it in an undemocratic manner. Since his ascension to office, there have been several resignations, which do not speak well for the administration of the Lusignan Golf Club.
Since the beginning of the year, there has been no executive meeting; the treasurer has resigned and no financial report has been prepared.
The Annual General Meeting that was scheduled to be held three months ago, is still being awaited. Mr. Editor, our club which is the only registered golf club in Guyana held several tournaments throughout the year, but now very few are organised and its seems that our club has become the exclusive domain of a few.
For the year, the club has held three tournaments so far, way less than in previous years.
The club is staffed by unqualified persons closely associated with the top brass of the club, replacing hard dedicated workers who were forced to quit under controversial circumstances.
It would be interesting if an investigation was carried out to ascertain how many under-aged boys are illegally employed by the present administration of the Lusignan Golf Club.
Mr Editor, the last straw that broke the camel’s back occurred on Easter Monday last.
Traditionally, the club allowed families to access the club’s facilities on that day for free, except for a vehicle fee. But last Monday, the club’s Acting President and his few supporters, without the approval of the entire admin committee, imposed a fee on persons for use of the facility, much to the annoyance of villagers.
They actually shut the gates on villagers who tried to enter. This led to Assistant Secretary Treasurer resigning in protest with immediate effect. I am praying for the day when the Annual General Elections is held so that we can return the running of the club to tried and trusted leaders.
