New Amsterdam has a new Mayor in businessman Kirt Wynter.
Winter, 37, of Vryman’s Erven will be serving for the first time on the council. He
was elected when the council held its first statutory meeting in the Chambers of the New Amsterdam Town Council on Friday. His deputy is long serving Councillor Winifred Haywood.
Haywood, a retired Headteacher, former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union and a preacher at the Mission Chapel Church in New Amsterdam, is the only returning member from the old council. She is seen as a good foil to guide the young Wynter forward.
Former Mayor Claude Henry who was touted as one of the longest serving Mayors, and his wife, University of Guyana Psychology, Sociology and Social Work lecturer, Paulette Henry, were on hand to congratulate the new Mayor and offer words of advice.
Also in attendance were Senior Minister of Social Protection, Volda Lawrence, and Regional Chairman David Armogan. They also offered words of congratulations to the new Mayor, his deputy and the new councillors.
The Ruling APNU/AFC coalition won 12 seats in the 14-seat council.
