Quick deployment of police ranks to the remote Yarakita area resulted in the arrest of a man who subsequently admitted to fatally stabbing his fellow villager Dalton Emanuel last Tuesday night.
The police had received reports of the stabbing minutes after Emanuel’s lifeless body was taken to the Mabaruma Hospital for the official pronouncement of his death.
Divisional Commander Ravindradat Budhram yesterday informed that he instructed the dispatch of ranks from Mabaruma early Wednesday morning in order to prevent the suspect from fleeing to neighbouring Venezuela.
He said that when captured, the suspect cooperated with the ranks and gave a statement in which he admitted killing Emanuel.
Police in a press release yesterday said that at 22:00 hours on Tuesday, miner Dalton Emanuel, 19, of Yarakita, North West District was involved in an argument with another man at Yarakita, during which he was stabbed to his abdomen with a pair of scissors.
According to a source, Emanuel and the suspect had a heated altercation the previous night and many thought that the matter had ended there. But the following day the suspect, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol, ran into Emanuel and accosted him again. A fight ensued and he pulled out a scissors and stabbed Emanuel.
“Like he de prepare fuh back up de man and kill he,” a source in the Yarakita area told Kaieteur News.
Police are awaiting a post mortem report as they prepare to charge the suspect.
