Three teams from Linden have been added to the Annual Mayor’s Cup football tournament which set to kick off on May 1 at Victoria Ground on the East Coast of Demerara.
The tournament features 32 teams from Georgetown (7), West Demerara (7), East Bank (3), Berbice (2), Linden (3) and East Coast (5) battling for a first prize of $1,000,000. The other top prizes on offer are $500,000, $300,000 and $200,000 respectively for the second to fourth place finishers.
Coordinator Lennox Arthur informed that this tournament, which is in its 22nd year, will this year feature no team from the Elite League making it an open battle to claim the top spots. This event will form part of the 50th Anniversary Jubilee celebrations, with the tournament running from May 1 to 29.
Surinamese Masters Football Club Botofago, are scheduled to be here to face the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Masters on the supporting card on the 29th. The organizing committee is looking for full corporate support and encouraged potential sponsors to come on board. The tournament will open on May 1st at the Victoria Ground with a triple header which brings together Federal Winners Connection vs Beacon at 4:30pm, Ann’s Grove vs Black Pearl from 6:30 and Golden Grove vs Police in the nightcap from 8:30pm.
May 2 at the Victoria ground; Buxton Bakewell vs Grove High Tech, Vitoria Kings vs Agricola and Mahaica vs Herstelling, while matches will be played on May 5 at the Victoria ground, May 7 at GFC ground, May 8 at Victoria; Mahaica May 13 at GFC and May 14 at Victoria.
The games will be of 90 minute duration and if no result is derived after this period then 20 minutes of extra time will be contested. No further result of deadlock will be determined by penalty kicks.
Players involved in this tournament must be affiliated to their respective associations where the invited clubs are drawn. No entry fee is required. The tournament is governed under the rules and directives of the Guyana Football Federation. Players with double yellow cards or red cards will be penalized in accordance with the rules of the competition and the GFF.
