Former cop Shawn Sandy, who allegedly shot a dredge owner a week ago, was on Wednesday charged with manslaughter when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that he unlawfully killed Feroze Khan at Buoy Hole, Mazaruni, on March 24. His Attorney Mark Waldron made submissions that the shooting was accidental and that the two men were close and had attended the same Mosque in Alexander Village.
He said further that on the day in question, both Sandy and Khan were in a backdam when a firearm was discovered and while they were examining it, a round was discharged and Khan was subsequently hit.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones disputed Waldron’s statement, saying that the police were in possession of a caution statement, in which Sandy said the weapon was found by him and then taken back to the camp.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan denied Sandy bail and remanded him to prison until April 20, when he will appear at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
