Demerara thumped the Guyana Cricket Board Select U15 team by 142 runs when the Inter-County U17 50-over tournament commenced yesterday.
Openers Bhaskar Yadram and Joshua Persaud gave Demerara a fine start with a half century stand after they decided to bat at Wales. Both batsmen played aggressively with Yadram hitting pacer Jevon Schultz for sixes before she was caught at slip off the said bowler for 32. The U15 bowlers then picked up a few quick wickets to restrict the scoring fairly; off spinner Dwayne Dick bowled Alphius Boookie for four while left arm spinner Nigel Deodat sent back Rajendra Singh for nine before Persaud went for 28 to leave Demerara at 100-5.
It took a 68-run sixth wicket partnership between Sagar Hatheramani and Kurt Lovell to boost their batting. Hatheramani timed the ball well, hitting six fours before he was dismissed for 54, while Lovell who smashed four fours went for 44. The remaining batsmen didn’t offer much resistance as Demerara posted 213 all out in 48.3 overs. Schultz was the pick of the bowlers with 3-34, while Deodat had 2-29, Seon Glasgow 2-37 and Dick 2-43.
The U15 side never recovered after losing openers Mohamed Shaw (05) and Jarron France (04) and were sent packing for 71 in 35.4 overs. Schultz and Glasgow were the only batsmen that reached double figures with 17 and 14 respectively in a disappointing batting display. Ashmead Nedd claimed 3-10, Yadram 2-5, Anthony Antonio 2-14 and man-of-the-match Hatheramani 2-15.
The competition continues tomorrow and surprisingly players such as Michael Pooran, Daniel Mootoo, Andre Seepersaud and Andrew Samaroo are not included in the U15 team after performing creditably in the inter-county U15 competition.
