Dear Editor,
Your article captioned “Brian Tiwarie (BK) appointed Business Advisor to Government” carried in your March 28, 2016 edition makes interesting reading, and the one captioned “A criminal probe will answer all questions…..East Bank housing land scandal” carried on March 29 makes even more interesting reading.
Editor, it befuddles the mind of any right and logical thinking person that amidst a reported scandal whereby Mr. Tiwarie is embroiled in an imbroglio that involves millions of Guyanese patrimony could be appointed as an advisor on business to this government. It’s reported that this gentleman was bequeathed by the previous administration 100 acres of prime real estate land on the East Bank of Demerara to a specially created entity, Sunset Lakes, which was seemingly formed to facilitate the land transfer. The land was sold by the previous government to Tiwarie for G$458M; G$13M less than what it was worth 3 years before. Land value depreciates in this case!
Two months after the land sale to Tiwarie by the Central Housing and Planning Authority, the goodly gentleman sold the said land to Bai Shan Lin Forest Development’s local principal, Chu Hongbo, for a whopping US$8M or G$1.6 billion. This transaction resulted in a profit of G$1.142 billion in 2 two months. No wonder this gentleman could be appointed an advisor to this government for business. From this phenomenal turnover in profit in such a short period he is worthy of being appointed the Minister of Business.
Editor, this government won the last election on its campaigned philosophy to stamp out corruption and pledged to the electorates that it will lead this nation on a trail of honesty, prudence and good management. I am afraid this appointment certainly defies that philosophy that this government campaigned upon.
It is incomprehensible that a Vice President of this government, Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan, and a leading figure in the AFC faction of the APNU/AFC government is not aware of this appointment until he read about it in KN on March 28. Worst yet, as the subject minister responsible for national security he is recommending “an investigation into the lands, hundreds of acres of it worth billions of dollars, should be launched”.
Well Mr. Minister, this is a case of a government whereby its right hand does not know what its left hand is doing. On the one hand, the Minster of National Security is recommending a criminal investigation of the transaction of a gentleman who has been appointed on January 19, 2016 as Ministerial Advisor on Business Development by the Minster of State. It’s obvious that there is a serious conflict of interests by 2 most senior government ministers in this appointment. Surely, as a ministerial advisor on business, such an important appointment ought to have been discussed and endorsed at Cabinet. From Mr. Ramjattan’s public admission, it appears not. Can someone brings some semblance of order in this comedy, or is it tragedy, of national errors and convince this nation that it will practice what it preached? Over to you, Mr. President.
