A family of Bartica, Region 7, was once again thrown into a state of grief, following the death of
one of its youngest members, 15-year old, Lenon Fredericks.
Fredericks, a resident from One Mile Potaro Road and a student of Three Mile Secondary School, drowned on Easter Monday whilst he was fishing with some friends from church, at an area called “Point” in Bartica.
His demise came days after the death of another family member of the Fredericks’ family, Feroz Khan, who was “accidentally” shot by an employee in Mazaruni.
According to a relative, the student went into the water and began playing. Moments later he began “going down” into the water calling for help. Some of his friends leapt into the water to rescue him however, they were met with laughter – Fredericks had played a prank on them.
He would return into the water some time later, where it was suspected that his feet slipped off a submerged rock on which he was standing and subsequently dropped into a crater on the river bed.
The relative said that one of Fredericks’ friends, after seeing what had happened, began calling out to adults in the area to render assistance.
“By the time they reach there, he had done gone down already. He could not swim. They pulled him out a lil time after,” the relative said.
A Post Mortem Examination is scheduled to be conducted on Friday. Fredericks will be laid to rest on Saturday. He is survived by his parents and three siblings.
