Sisters Village manslaughter case for summing up today

Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry is set to sum up in the trial of Shameer Mohamed at the Georgetown High Court, today.
Mohamed is facing a charge of manslaughter for Munrajie Amza, his reputed wife. The incident allegedly occurred on May 12, 2001, at Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara. The victim suffered severe burns about her body after she was set alight.
According to the facts of the matter, presented by State Prosecutors Michael Shahoud and Orinthia Schmidt, the victim also called “Sandra” was drenched in kerosene before Mohamed lit a match and threw it at her.
During the trial, former Police Sergeant Gordon Doobay testified via Skype that on May 16, he visited Amza after she was admitted at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for treatment. He recalled that the victim had told him that she believed she would die as a result of her injuries.
Amza told the detective that she poured the kerosene on herself on the morning of May 12, 2001 but it was the accused who lit the match, and she was burnt.
Prosecutor Shahoud in presenting his closing arguments yesterday told the mixed 12-member jury that it was a clear case of manipulation. He referred to the words of the deceased in which she told investigators that her then lover had urged her to douse herself in kerosene to prove her love to him.
But the accused, who is being represented by Attorney at law Michael Somersall, has repeatedly claimed he is innocent of the crime.
Additionally, Parmanand Bharrat called “Navin,” the brother of the deceased, claimed that the accused told him that he was at home that day, when “Sandra,” set herself alight, and that he had tried to extinguish the fire.
