Dear Editor,
On the 26th May 2016, Guyana will be celebrating 50 years of Independence. Amerindian leaders across this nation please, let us reflect on what we have achieved during the past 50 years, which is indeed very long time. “Are we satisfied with our leadership in our respective communities? Have we advanced in our living conditions? Have we uplifted ourselves educationally, economically or socially? These qualities my brothers are not for sale! Development and success can only be possible through skilled leadership, application, dedication and a system of accountability.
I say now to the three(3) Amerindian Organizations that are supposed to be active in this country, A. P. A, T. A. M. O. G and G. O. I. P- have you been of any help to your people and in what measure? Can each organization identify a project or development which has been a success? There are many Amerindian Villages or Communities in this country where its residents lives in abject poverty. Have the three organizations been actively involved in helping to reduce the impact? What about teenage pregnancy, trafficking in persons, drugs and substance abuse etc. There are numerous weak points in Amerindian Villages that need to be rectified. My question is, “who cares?” There are various charitable organizations helping to alleviate the numerous social issues experienced by citizens of this country.
Some donates food, some medical supplies and services, some build homes while others donates educational tools, clothing, and other domestic furnishing and appliances. Are the intellectual minds that govern these three Amerindian Organizations aware of the existence of such NGOs and what system do they have in place to ensure that aids from such, can filter into our impoverished Amerindian Villages?
Finally, I say to my Amerindian brothers who are leaders in your respective communities. “You have a moral responsibility to your people. The goal is not just to lead, but to lead your fellow indigenous brothers and sisters to a better and more fruitful way of life. It takes a good leader to hold up visions of a better society, a better country and a better world. That my brothers, takes monumental faith, faith to see qualities that are not visible, to see others not as you perceive them, but rather for what they are or may yet become. Let us therefore, move on in strength and unity and there will be a better life.
God bless Guyana, God bless Guyanese, God bless the president and his ministers.
