It seems like “revenge porn” is on the rise. The act defined as uploading or sharing intimate still or moving photography without consent, has grown rapidly along with social media and the immediacy of phone apps.
However, the first case of revenge porn was made public in Guyana only last year although there have been many cases before.
Only Saturday, a 26-year-old woman claimed that her pictures were posted on a local pornographic site, www.Guyanaporn.com by her husband when they split in 2013.
In a vicious, targeted attack, her ex- husband set up a Facebook account with her details, and posted explicit, intimate sexual pictures they had taken together- then invited all of her friends and family to see them.
The pictures and personal details were also posted on the site which has 1154 active members. It’s a shocking case, but it’s not the only one.
In August last year, a Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) woman had claimed that a man who had befriended her on a social media website a few months earlier, downloaded pictures of her, photo-shopped them and posted the pictures to the local pornographic site.
Thirty-three other women, including teenagers around Guyana have also reported that they too have had the same experience.
Some say that their pictures were stolen from Facebook and Instagram and their faces were cropped and placed on nude bodies.
One of the victims said that when she explained what had happened to her to a police friend, he told her that the Guyana Police Force does not have the resources to deal with these matters.
“He said that it would be hard to track down the persons who are posting these pictures without consent because these people are using fake names and email addresses and once they are using their phones, it will be difficult to track down the IP address,” the victim said.
In her case, someone stole three of her Facebook pictures and posted them on the site along with her profile name.
She believed that the person may have gotten access to her profile after she joined a few local sites where people discuss various issues such as politics, climate changes among other topics.
An Information Technology Administrator advises victims to do the following:
The first priority for any victim is to have the images removed from the public domain-permanently. There’s a good chance, given that a former partner has been vengeful enough to upload the images, that they won’t be particularly forthcoming in response to your complaints.
Therefore, requests must be made to the website(s) hosting the material.
The sites are hosted in different countries including Russia. These sites have been created with the sole purpose of hosting revenge porn, so getting something taken down isn’t always easy.
A trace on the domain (www.Guyanaporn.com) reveals that the name-server pointed to an IP address 5.199.161.33. The site is hosted in Lithuania.
The IT expert said that the Guyana Police Force can contact the international company that is renting the domain and lodge a complaint. Also, immediately after any nude pictures are published, victims should make a police report. Persons have previously been charged for circulating nude pictures of women.
