Millers in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) have commenced the purchase of paddy as rice farmers begin to sell or orchestrate sales for their product. Reports are that so far rice farmers are being paid between $2500 and $2300 for a bag of paddy. The latter figure has been described as the average price farmers have been receiving for a bag of paddy.
One farmer who operates on a large scale said he have received $2300 for a bag of paddy, but argued that he was expecting the price for a bag of paddy to have been a little higher since its more costly to produce rice, taking into consideration the cost farmers have to incur to sow.
Although this crop has been deemed as favourable, a number of farmers were unable to go back into the field due to the many financial commitments that they still have to the banks.
Farmers have been calling on the government to assist them with subsidised fertilizers and fuel.
Over 2,000 acres of cultivated rice lands were affected by the intrusion of “salt water”. Small scale farmers in Dartmouth Village were heavily affected.
Rice farming is the main income earner in Region Two and a large percentage of Essequibians are rice farmers.
During a recent visit to the Essequibo Coast, President David Granger give his commitment to farmers assuring them that at every possible opportunity he gets, especially with rice investors, he lobbies on behalf of farmers to promote rice for sale.
For the longest while rice farmers have been expressing their disgust with the poor price for rice, not taking into consideration, that the price for paddy is determined by the world market and not the government.
