A Police Constable who was caught on Saturday with an unlicensed 9mm pistol and 15 matching rounds is likely to make his first court appearance today.
The cop has been identified only as Benham. He worked at the Springlands Police Station, Berbice.
The policeman was among five men arrested after they were caught with the illegal weapon and ammunition.
Kaieteur News was told that a police traffic patrol stopped a group of five men, who were on three Honda CG motorcycles at North Road and Louisa Row, Georgetown.
A search was carried out on the men and the unlicensed gun with rounds was found on one of them, who was later identified as a Police Constable stationed in ‘B’ Division (Berbice).
The Constable was placed under close arrest while the other four men are being held for questioning. The motorcycles have been seized.
Investigators are trying to ascertain if the men are a part of a gang of armed bandits operating on motorcycles. Such a gang has been creating havoc in the city and its environs.
Ballistics checks are being done on the weapon to ascertain if it was used in any previous criminal activity.
The arrest of the cop further underscores the widely held belief that law enforcement operatives have been working in collaboration with criminal elements to perpetrate crimes.
