This man is irredeemable. This man is incredibly insulting. This man is repellant and obnoxious. This man is morbidly barefaced. This man is laughing at the Guyanese people. This man must be charged with the abuse of power. No one could have remained unmoved after reading what Bharrat Jagdeo said on the distribution of radio licences.
Jagdeo declared that he achieved ethnic and geographical balance in the licence award. He knew he was talking nonsense but he mouthed off, nevertheless, because he wanted to laugh at the nation. This nation should not accept his philistine crassness.
As President, Jagdeo awarded licences to the PPP; his intimate friend, Bobby Ramroop; his nephew, then Minister Robert Persaud; and other close associates. Enrico Woolford, Stabroek News, Kaieteur News were all denied. During this administrative masturbation of Jagdeo, Linden was restricted to receiving NCN signals only. Channel 69 television was given permission to increase its signal to Berbice. Bobby Ramroop’s radio and television coverage reached the entire country.
Jagdeo was deliberately insulting the entire country when he stated that he achieved ethnic balance in the award. One has to be hopelessly stupid to think that when we speak of ethnic balance in Guyana, it includes Africans who are in the PPP leadership. This latest manifestation of barefacedness from Jagdeo is a huge indication that he is not going to reflect and pronounce on any mistake he made during his twelve years as President.
Jagdeo, no matter how asinine is the grammar, how idiotic is the semantics, will ignore basic human decency and argue that he was a democratic, transparent, accountable President
Mr. Jagdeo can take his circus on the road because he is being treated with kid gloves by the current administration. The fear of the PPP’s cry of witch-hunt by the government has backfired with the LGE results. In what ways did the slow movement towards the prosecution of Jagdeo help the APNU-AFC regime? PPP supporters went out and voted in a contest in which the PPP got 29,000 more ballots than the Coalition in the total LGE. Did it occur to the Coalition that if Jagdeo was in the court with all the sordid revelations laid bare, then maybe the voters would have been disgusted?
The longer the Government takes to haul Mr. Jagdeo before the courts, the easier it will become for PPP supporters to think that the regime is bluffing and that they haven’t got evidence against Jagdeo and that they are trying to intimidate the PPP. It is possible that kind of thinking was a factor in the LGE results? In most countries of the world, charges would have been laid against Jagdeo in the Pradoville 2 scandal. What is the Government waiting for? After ten months in power, the evidence is still not there? Now a new twist has entered the radio licence scam.
The Guyanese people have been told that Dr. Fenton Ramsahoye has advised that the licence holders can seek redress in court if there is revocation. Two irritations are involved here and one of them concerns a very close friend of mine, Leonard Craig, Chairman of the Broadcasting Authority. It boggles the mind to know why he would want to keep as a secret the Attorneys that advised the Authority against licence cancellation. Secondly, Tony Vieira named Ramsahoye. Why not consult other opinions to see if Ramsahoye’s advice may have weak points?
But far more important is the fact that the APNU-AFC leaders are failing in their moral and political obligation to this country – they denounced the Jagdeo radio depravity when in opposition. If the licence-holder is going to move to the court in the event of abrogation of his document then let him, but the moral obligation by APNU-AFC leaders to Guyana must be fulfilled.
One hopes that the APNU-AFC leaders have learned their lessons with the LGE results – damn if you do, damn if you don’t. The administration after ten months have allowed Mr. Jagdeo to reclaim his support base because they have failed to prosecute him for horrible abuse of power never before seen in the placid, democratic environment of the English-speaking Caribbean.
The land giveaways that have resulted in billions going into the pockets of the cabal Jagdeo nurtured simply numbs the mind. When one looks at what Jagdeo did with the resources of this sad, tragic, poor country it breaks one’s heart. The government, sooner rather than later, have to drag Mr. Jagdeo and his co-conspirators before the courts. Mr. Jagdeo abused power in terrible ways. He must answer for it.
