A Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) worker died on Saturday after he was stung by a swarm of bees at the Blairmont Estate, West Bank Berbice.
In a release to the press, the Sugar Corporation stated that it is saddened to announce that around 12:45 hours on Saturday, “Some of our employees from Bath Settlement were in the Old Bath Field on the road to the estate cultivation when they were attacked by a swarm of bees.”
As a result of the attack, the Sugar Corporation said, one of their employees Mr. Romesh Lalaram was fatally injured.
According to Guysuco, several other employees were also stung by the bees. However, prompt response by the Estate Management saw them being rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital in the Estate’s ambulance. Unfortunately, Lalaram was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
“Six of the seven employees were treated and sent home while one remains in hospital under observation.” the release said.
The Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Guyana Sugar Corporation expressed deepest condolences to the family of the dead sugar worker. The Corporation is currently liaising closely with the family of the deceased to provide support at this very sad time and promises to provide further details as more information becomes available.
