A week of activities began yesterday at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground
with the playing of the junior matches after an exhibition match between the two top Primary schools girls team Stella Marris and St Stephen’s Primary.
The events were organised by the North American Alumni of the Club which was founded in 1971 and most of the former Pele players now residing in the USA were present yesterday as was the club’s new President Robby Rambarran.
Under overcast skies at the (GFC) Stella Marris Primary School led by Most-Valuable-Player Sarah Matthias beat St Stephen’s Primary on penalty kicks 3-2, while Skipper Randy Roberts scored a 17th minute Goal from the penalty spot to give Santos FC a 1-nil win against Alpha United FC in the Frank Watson U-15 final.
Stella Marris and Stephen’s went head with the nimble Matthias showing her skill in the evenly fought contest which ended nil all at the full time. Matthias scored the winning goal from the penalty spot.
In another keenly contested affair the talented Roberts scored the game’s only
goal from the penalty spot to give Santos the win after Alpha’s defender Travis Daniels was given a yellow card for ‘Handled ball’ inside the 18-yard box.
Roberts, who was later adjudged the MVP of the tournament, calmly beat the diving custodian to his right to take the 30-minute to half at 1-0 which was eventual margin of victory when the game ended.
The first game, scheduled to commence at 10:00hrs did not begin until 15:00hrs while after the under-17 match up the Pele Masters were set to play an overseas Veterans unit under lights last night. The U-17 game saw GFC beat Santos 2-0 with Tyrese Rowley netted the double in the 6th and 36th minutes. The MVP of that category was Steven King of GFC. The highest goalscorer was Kelsey Benjamin of GFC.
Calvin Peters from Eastville Primary scored the most goals (5) in the U-17 tournament. Medals and trophies were presented after each game while Lap tops will be given to each of MVPs of each category at the Sports and Education Banquet at the Georgetown Club on Friday evening.
Today there will be a family fun day from 10:00hrs and admission is free. (Sean Devers)
