NBS Second Division 40-Over Cricket Competition in Berbice
– Tucber Park also through
Rose Hall Town Bakewell held their nerve in a high scoring quarter-final encounter to squeeze out Young
Warriors by just 9 runs to advance to the semi-finals of the New Building Society Second Division 40-Over Cricket Competition in Berbice.
In the match which was played at the Area “H” Ground in Rose Hall Town, Rose Hall Town Bakewell opting to bat first was given a start of 63 in 9.3 Overs by two former Berbice youth cricketers Michael Hicks and Michael Felix. After Hicks fell for 44, Felix was joined by former Guyana wicket-keeper-batsman Delbert Hicks and the two of them added another 85 for the 2nd wicket before Felix was bowled for 45 at 148 for 2.
Hicks continued in his hard-hitting style and he and former Berbice Under-19 cricketer Khemraj Mahadeo put on 80 for the third wicket after which Mahadeo went for 30 at 228 for 3.
Hicks stuck around, continuing to belt the bowling around and helped Rose Hall Town to amass 294 for 8 in their 40-Overs with Hicks contributing 120 (11 fours and 7 sixes). Bowling for Young Warriors, Zaheer Moakan took 4 for 40 and Berbice Under-15 offspinner Aaron Beharry 2 for 38.
When Young Warriors began to chase the daunting target they lost Mortimer Fraser for 0 with just 3 runs on the board. However, the other opener, Waheid Edwards was not ruffled and undertook to keep Warriors in the hunt. Guyana Under-19 allrounder Kassim Khan proceeded to put on 84 in just 12-Overs before Khan became offspinner Khemraj Mahadeo’s first victim for 37.
Edwards then partnered with Moakan and they continued to attack, putting on 36 in 5-Overs between them after which Moakan went for 27.
The veteran Rudolph “Gussy” Baker then came in and he and Edwards kept Warriors on track, the two then put on 84 for the 4th wicket before Baker fell to Mahadeo for 44 at 207 for four in the 30th Over.
Edwards continued to battle through and with some support from Amir Khan (23), he kept Warriors alive but with them needing 23 runs in the final Over, he eventually fell in that Over for 103 (7 fours and 1 six), his efforts going in vain as Warriors ended on 285 for 9 in 40-Overs to lose by 9 runs.
Khemraj Mahadeo ended with 5 for 25 from 8-Overs.
Also through to the semi-finals are Tucber Park who was granted a walkover after Skeldon Community Centre could only muster six (6) players for their quarter-final.
