Linden Carter, Head of the Organising Committee of Pele Football Club’s 45th anniversary celebrations
informed that a number of activities are being sponsored by the North America Alumni under the theme ‘Making a better life through Sports and Education’ from today to mark the event.
Pele was founded in 1971 and Under-15 and 17 tournaments are presently being contested in the name of the club’s first President, Frank Watson. Today’s activities commences with an opening Ceremony at GFC from 09:00hrs before the U-15 final kicks off at 10:00hrs and the U-17 final at noon.
Stella Maris Primary and St Stephens’ Primary, the two top Girls’ teams at Primary school level, will face-off in an exhibition game from 14:00hrs. Pele’s Masters will go head-to-head with an overseas Veterans unit from 17:00hrs before the opening night climaxes under lights with the elite teams from Pele and Alpha battling each other from 19:00hrs.
On Easter Sunday a fun day for the young ones will be held at GFC starting from 10:00hrs. Athletic contests and novelty games will be contested while snacks will be provided for all youths.
Special prizes will be awarded to the first 20 children and adults arriving by 10:00hrs. Admission to all events is free. On Tuesday school bags with educational supplies will be distributed to youths in need of additional support. Wednesday will see a three-hour Coaches Seminar at GFC from 09:00hrs and a football camp for the youngsters.
Carter stated that all kids will receive a football and a back pack with School supplies adding that meals and refreshments will be provided for Wednesday’s activity. Carter, who played in Pele’s inaugural match and now resides in the USA) informed that the activities will conclude with five matches at GFC on Thursday.
The competition should be intense when arch rivals Pele FC and Santos FC go head-to-head at various levels at the Mecca of the sport in the city. From 14:00hrs Pele and Santos tangle at U-15 and from 15:00hrs the U-17s will be the focus.|
From 16:00hrs the overseas Masters play Santos activities ends with what should be a pulsating match-up between Pele’s Elite reserves and the Santos’ senior team from 17:00hrs.
The week of events culminates on Friday evening (April 1) with a Sports & Education Awards Banquet at the Georgetown Club where the winners of the Primary and Secondary school’s Essay Competition will be awarded their prizes which include a lap top, desktop and cash vouchers. The competition was facilitated by the Ministry of Education.
