Tree planting exercise an ‘important step’ for Guyana’s green future
President David Granger plants a tree on Merriman Mall
– says President at PYARG activity
President David Granger has commended the President’s Youth Award – Republic of Guyana (PYARG) Programme for engaging youths in a Tree Planting exercise. This is an important step toward the green future that Guyana is pursuing, he said. The exercise was held on the Merriman’s Mall, Georgetown, yesterday.
President Granger noted that this activity was “an important step” that every citizen must embrace as Guyana aims to become a leader in sustainable development and embarks on green initiatives.
He recalled that in October 2015, his administration, through the Ministry of Agriculture, launched the National Tree Planting Day to kick-off observances for Agriculture Month, which focused on promoting effective conservation and the development of a green economy.
“It is a policy for the greening of the economy. I hope that what we saw here today is replicated in other parts of the country. (Places such as Mabaruma and Lethem) are places that must be administered by a town that is green. We want a completely green environment so that our country can be healthier. We don’t want people to concentrate just here, but planting mangroves and so on the seashore. This is just one of the spokes in the wheel,” President Granger said.
The Head of State also said that this is one of the efforts which will be promoted and encouraged by his administration, in addition to pursuing renewable energy generation.
Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder was pleased to see young people taking responsibility for the environment. He echoed the President’s sentiments that all Guyanese have a role to play in sustainable development..
“Such an event is vital to everyone especially the youths, our future generation. Protecting and maintaining the environment is important for sustainable agriculture and the future for where our children can live. Aside from the known benefits of a clean and green environment, it has the potential to transform food security, reduce poverty and create jobs…Sustainable development should be our priority. It is our responsibility to protect our environment. Every person must play their part. This momentum must be carried forward,” the Minister said.
