Illegal gun lands man in hot water

A 42-year-old Albouystown resident appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Tuesday, to answer to a charge of illegal firearm and ammunition possession.
Dexter Bharrat of Lot 32 James Street, Albouystown, Georgetown is accused of having a .45 pistol in his possession on March 18, at Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.
It was further alleged that on the same day, he had six .45 live rounds of ammunition in his possession, without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Bharrat, who had no legal representation, pleaded not guilty to both charges read to him in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The defendant was remanded to prison until April 12, after Police Prosecutor, Inspector Neville Jeffers opposed his pre-trial liberty.
Inspector Jeffers indicated that a ballistics report is still outstanding from the police file.
Meanwhile, in another case, five men were each ordered to post bail in the sum of $25,000 each after they were accused of attempting to break into an insurance firm.
Steve Singh, 23 of Yarrow Dam, East Ruimveldt; Leonard Allicock, 53, of James Street, Albouystown; Trevor James, 38, of Durban Street, Lodge; Clinton Kissoon, 47, of William Street Kitty; and Torrell Timmerman, 47, denied the allegation read to them by the Chief Magistrate.
Particulars of the charge alleged that on March 20, at Brickdam, they attempted to break into the MP Insurance and Brokerage Company.
Prosecutor Jeffers had no objection to the defendant being released on bail. Jeffers stated that nothing was stolen from the building.
This matter had been adjourned until April 14.
