The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) has endorsed the newly formulated Linden Table Tennis Steering Committee (LTTSC) as an affiliate member. The GTTA Executive Committee has been actively engaging, supporting and providing direction to the plans, work, activities and members of this committee as part of its plans for the decentralisation of the sport.
The GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe recently visited Linden to meet with the newly formulated committee to listen to their plans and ideas. Munroe subsequently outlined the plans, projects and mandates of the association.
The duly elected members as endorsed by the GTTA are: Howard James (Chairman of LTTSC) (ITTF Level 1 Coach); Victor Wright (Vice Chairman); Shavin Greene (General Secretary and ITTF Level 1 Coach); Maurice Cummings (Treasurer); Paul Jones (Assistant Secretary/Treasurer).
The Committee’s mandate, which falls under the supervision of the GTTA, will be to promote, develop and coordinate the game in Linden. The Committee has set out some key initiatives as part of its plans/mandate to develop the sport in Linden. These include the hosting of a Novices Schools Teams and Individual Table Tennis Championships.
The central aim and objective of hosting the event is to stimulate students/players interest and commence a system to actively engage players in Linden and Region 10, introducing them to the sport of table tennis in view of increasing participation.
As part of the long term projection, the Committee has identified the McKenzie High Schools auditorium as a central area that can facilitate six tables for training after school and on weekends.
The Committee has also engaged the Director of Sports, Christopher Jones for assistance in the form of tables, rackets, nets and balls. The Director has pledged his support and has already made a contribution of four trophies for the School Novices Championships.
Based on training programmes organised by the Committee in the recent pass, which yielded over 40 students and targeted primary school kids, the committee feels there is an abundance of talent, which if nurtured and given the opportunity, can truly excel.
Linden has had a rich history in the sport of table tennis with several players who have donned national colours with pride. The GTTA views the role of this committee as pivotal to assisting the association with the development of the sport in Guyana
