The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association will run off a two day training camp for Under-16 boxers as part of preparation for the Caribbean’s first Schoolboys and Junior’s tournament scheduled for next month.
The training camp starts on Saturday at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis gym in Albouystown and concludes the following day. Boxers will come from the Clifton Moore’s Essequibo Boxing Gym, Pocket Rocket Gym and Carryl’s Gym of Linden, Rose Hall Jammers of Berbice and Harpy Eagles and Forgotten Youth Foundation of Georgetown.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle disclosed that the camp would be conducted by Sebert Blake in collaboration with the association’s Technical Director Terrence Poole and several other coaches.
“In total we have 35 boxers participating in the camp. It is the first of several to be conducted before we get to the International competition,” Ninvalle said.
The International Schoolboys and Junior’s tournament is scheduled for April 29 and 30 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. It is first of its kind to be held in the region and comes at a time when Caribbean nations are calling for more emphasis to be placed on the sport’s nursery.
So far Barbados, Jamaica and St Lucia have confirmed participation in the tournament.
Last month GABA named three females in a shortlist of 40 boxers to training for possible selection to represent Guyana next month.
The three females, Akea Lamazone, Rianna Rogers and Rondessa Bagot come from the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym. Eleven members of the shortlisted squad are from the Forgotten Youth Foundation Gym in Albouystown, while 10 fighters represent the Essequibo Gym.
Essequibo was crowned Champion Gym at the last DDL Under-16 competition and leading its charge would be the talented Shaquancy Wright, a member of Team Guyana at last year’s Caribbean Development Tournament.
The shortlisted boxers are:
Forgotten Youth Foundation: Seon Griffith, Stephon Smith, Orin Bancroft, Jamie Kellman, Dwayne Baptise, Sean Graham, Travis Inverary, Shakiem Jones, Brian Harris, Orin Harris and Shamar Bumbury.
