Competition in the STAG sponsored East Bank Football Association (EBFA) Senior League is set to heat up today when two more matches are contested at the Grove Playfield, East Bank Demerara.
Agricola Red Triangle will be hunting their second win in as many matches when they come up against Kuru Kururu Warriors in the feature match at 13:30hrs; today’s curtain raiser pits Diamond United and Mocha Champs, both teams hunting their first win following opening losses.
Agricola were in rampaging form when they opposed Diamond United whom they hammered 8-0, while Mocha were needled by Herstelling late in their match that was contested on Sunday last.
Captain Winston Rawlins who netted a brace against Diamond will certainly be aiming for a repeat as will Devon Jeffers who also scored twice in that win. Collis Samuels too, along with Travis Fariah, Jermaine Frank, Akeem Rawlins, Kacy ‘Barbie’ John and Akeem Pompey will combine in the victory charge.
Kuru Kururu Warriors narrowly lost to the Soesdyke rivals after taking the lead and they will be hoping to make amends for that loss at the expense of Agricola which makes the match up a potentially mouthwatering affair.
The Linden Soesdyke highway based Warriors will look to their leading marksman, Cordel Johnson for leadership up front along with Ryan Scott, Mario DeFreitas, Allen O’Selmo, Michael Charles, Christopher Fraser and Michael Carrington.
Diamond will look to the likes of Nathaniel Paul, Reun Williams, Clifford Armstrong, Godfrey Williams and Cleon Headley to lead their victory bid.
Meanwhile, in results from last Sunday’s double header, Grove staved off a spirited fightback from Soesdyke to win 4-2, while Herstelling took full points when they found the winning goal late in the second half to turn back the challenge of Mocha Champs.
In a closely contested match, Eric Williams’ 86th minute stunner was the separator between the two sides. Herstelling enjoyed the better run and could have easily won the match by about five goals but kept missing chance after chance.
The opening match saw Grove having to dig deep to pull off a win against the determined Soesdyke Falcons. Denzil Crawford, who hammered in a brace, had given Grove the lead in the 7th minute but the advantage was short-lived as Soesdyke responded in like manner in the 14th minute through the first of two goals from Alvin Adams.
The first half ended 1-1 as pressure continued to mount on the defending champions, Grove. The home team finally found the go ahead goal in the 62nd minute that was headed home by Lloyd Matthews.
For a moment it seemed that that second goal was enough to secure full points for Grove but with three minutes to full time, Adams fired in the equalizer for Soesdyke. With one minute to the full 90 minutes, Soesdyke buckled under pressure and scored against themselves, Delwin Boston the player.
Grove kept on applying the pressure and secured their fourth goal, Crawford putting the icing on the cake in the fourth minute of added on time, 90+4.
