The Championship winning Guyana Jaguars on Sunday won this season’s WICB’s PCL First-Class tournament with an emphatic innings and 54-run last-round victory against Jamaica Scorpions at Providence to register
back-to-back wins and take the Lion’s share of this season’s prize money.
The Jaguars won a record equaling eight matches while drawing the other two against Barbados Pride and Leewards Hurricanes as they roared to their eighth title and second in a row under Leon Johnson who made his First-Class debut at Enmore in 2004.
Johnson has led Guyana 22 times since making his captaincy debut in 2013 against the Windward Islands in St Vincent when he took over from Veerasammy Permaul who was on West Indies duty.
Since then Johnson has won 15, lost three and drawn four of his games as Captain after losing his first three as Skipper.
Guyana’s titles were achieved in 1973 (Rohan Kanhai), 1975 & 1983 (Clive Lloyd) 1987 & 1996 (Roger Harper), 1998 (Carl Hooper) and 2015 & 2016 (Leon Johnson).
The Jaguars finished seven points ahead of second placed Barbados, winners of the most titles (21) since the Shell Shield tournament was first played in 1966.
Jaguars also won eight matches last season but suffered their only loss to Barbados at Providence. Jamaica, who holds the record for most consecutive wins (2008-2012), is the only other team with eight wins which they did the 2008 and 2012 seasons.
A total sum of us$120,000 was up for grabs this season and the Jaguars collected us$43,200 with Johnson just missing another us$1,500 by one catch. He finished one short of Orlando Peters’ 18.
The Jaguars got us$15,000 for winning the Headly/Weeks Trophy, Johnson (807) collected us$1,500 for scoring the most runs for winning the Viv Richards award and Keeper Anthony Bramble (34) got us$1,500 and the Deryck Murray award for having the most dismissals.
In addition, each time a player received a Man-of-the-Match award they collected us$150 while every win for a team earned them us$3,000. Jaguars’ players got MOM awards in eight of their 10 games and won eight matches.
