Even as he showered praises on the team for an emphatic 7-0 win over Anguilla at
the Guyana National Stadium in their Scotiabank CFU Men’s Caribbean Cup opening match, Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz expressed disgust at the fact that there is a dearth of good football facilities available.
While the plain spoken Shabazz stated that he does not fear any Caribbean opponent, he did note that his fear is that they do not have facilities to train. Guyana went into the Anguilla match without any proper preparation time at the match venue.
“This is what I fear more than any opponent. We must be serious, if we want to be a sporting organization that can make an impact for our people, facilities must be a priority. There is no love lost for me to say this because this is the truth.”
On the path of building his fourth national team along with Co-Coach Wayne Dover, Shabazz appealed that the least they must have is a facility where they can train properly.
“Anguilla said they trained for six weeks, they are lucky because they have field, they are one tiny nation and they have a field. We are one big mighty nation with so much land and we don’t have field, how can we feel good?
How can I feel satisfied that we win a game 7-0, I am not satisfied, I am very disappointed and I call on everyone, Government, corporate Guyana and the people of this Blessed country for us to recognize the role that sports plays in Human Development and how important it is.”
Having a cricket stadium he said contributes to the nation producing top cricketers that hold their own on the world stage but that must now be duplicated to harness the rich football talent being unearthed.
“Again I call Guyana, one of your children have been taken care of and has facilities, what about the rest of your children? “
Captain Christopher Nurse whilst thanking the fans for their support summed up that his team played very well, disciplined and was professional in their execution even after going up by so many goals early.
Nurse lamented too that they Golden Jaguars are in a rebuilding mode with a number of new faces emerging from the Stag Elite League; seven of the starting X1 were from the SEL.
The long standing captain who has just returned to play with Puerto Rico FC has brought his experience and connections in that country to the fore to the extent that Guyana will enjoy a few extra days of preparations there.
They will leave on Friday for next Tuesday’s encounter where they will have access to full sized fields to prepare, Shabazz noted last night.
