Dear Editor,
A rather good analysis in the letter about the quandary of vulnerable children whose predicament could eventually lead to attempted or actual suicide. I have often wondered “Why bring children into the world if you did not want them in the first place”?
Among the many valuable suggestions given in the letter, I had hoped to see the role concerned neighbours could play in bringing the plight of such children to the notice of the welfare people, with perhaps a swift solution to the problem.
In my experience, neighbours would discuss among themselves the unfairness of mean treatment by parents to such children but take the view that “it is difficult to interfere in matters between a parent and child.” Encourage neighbours to report constant abuse, guaranteeing protection of their identity, and hope for their help. Complaints from several of such sources could be taken seriously and acted upon.
It is worth a try. I have experienced neighbours whispering among themselves about such a matter, until one of them one day asked the mother the question “Why do you like to beat like that”? She then followed the question by saying that she grew up “with very little of that”. That put an end to the constant bashing.
Neighbour involvement may be worth a try. “It takes a village………”.
Geralda Dennison.
