Convicted robber jailed for second time in five months
Nico Layne has been jailed again. This time for one year and three months by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan,

for another armed robbery.
Layne, 21, of Lot 59 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown was convicted for robbing Ivelaw Hartman of a cell phone and $19,000 cash – all totaling $30,400 while he was armed with a knife on June 12, 2015.
Yesterday, during the summing up of evidence, the Magistrate told the court that she had considered the evidence given by witnesses for the prosecution, led by Police Inspector, Neville Jeffers.
She said that she believed that the identification parade was conducted in a fair manner.
According to the Magistrate, Layne had told the court that he could not recall where he was on the day in question, and that he did not rob anyone.
Magistrate McLennan affirmed that she disbelieved Layne’s story, and had determined that he had premeditated and planned the robbery. The Magistrate took into consideration the time the convict had spent on remand pending trial before imposing the prison term.
Layne is currently serving a 58 months sentence for an offence of similar nature.
The prison terms will run concurrently.
Last November, he was jailed by City Magistrate Judy Latchman after being found guilty of robbing a taxi driver at gunpoint.
Layne robbed Shafeik Mohamed of a Digicel cellular phone valued $39,000 and $26,000 cash. The robbery occurred on May 6, 2015.
Court facts revealed that on the day in question around 17:05hrs, Mohamed was driving along Parade Street, Georgetown when he was stopped by Layne and another man. The men inquired from the taxi driver if he was working and subsequently boarded the vehicle. Layne sat in the back seat, while his accomplice sat in the front passenger’s seat.
The facts disclosed that the men requested that Mohamed take them to a certain location. On arrival at the location, Layne and his partner pointed a knife and gun at the taxi driver and demanded him to hand over his valuables. They then made good their escape.
Throughout both trials, Layne had no legal representation.
